KOREAN REPUBLIC REGIME APPROVED: SLAV FILIBUSTER

(N.Z.P.A. —Reuter—Copyright.)

(10 a.m.) PARIS, Dec. 12. The United Nations Assembly, by 48 votes to 6, with Sweden abstaining, approved of the Government of the Republic of Korea and decided to continue the Korean supervisory commission for another year.

The Russian bloc maintained its boy colt of the commission.

When the debate resumed this afternoon, M. Jacob Malik, Russia, carried on the Slav filibuster. M. Malik attacked the Seoul regime, alleging that the United States had set up a puppet Government to make a “happy hunting ground” for American capitalists. "Conspiracy of Silence”

Forty-seven nations attended the session. They met the Soviet filibuster with a “conspiracy of silence” waiting for it to end so they could vote and leave for their homes.

After the Czechoslovakian delegate, Professor Prochazka, and the Yugoslavian, Dr. Ales Bebler, supported M. Malik’s attack on the Korean Commission and the American policies in Korea, the Assembly voted its approval of Korea and decided to continue the supervisory commission for another year.

The Assembly also approved of a Canadian proposal cutting the commission members from nine to seven.

By a show of hands the Assembly had defeated a Russian resolution calling for the termination of the Korean Commission. Only the Slav States supported this resolution. The Assembly’s Anal resolution, which was carried, also recommended the Russian and American occupying Powers should withdraw their forces from Korea as early as practicable. •

Members of Commission

The seven members of the commision now are Australia, China, El Salvador, France, India, Philippines and Syria. After the vote Dr. Evatt declared the Assembly business closed.

Dr. Evatt presided throughout each of the 51 meetings of the United Nations General Assembly. It is the first time in United Nations’ history that the president had not shared the duties with any of the seven Assembly vice-presidents.

The custom of previous assemblies in London and New York was for the president to hand the job to others occasionally. The Yugoslav delegation appealed to M. Lie to take urgent steps with the Greek Government to save the lives of 620 hostages, described as former members of the Greek National Liberation Army, who, it was said, were now being executed.
