Viceregal Tour Of West Australia
(10 a.m.) PERTH, Dec. 13. Sir Bernard and Lady Freyberg returned to Perth yesterday after a twoday tour of the south-west areas of Western Australia. After visiting the Karri forests, Sir Bernard said he was impressed by Die immense value of the timber industry of Western Australia. Most of the New Zealand hardwoods had been used and that country had to rely upon planting exotic softwoods for its timber requirements.
At Pemberton Sir Bernard and Lady Freyberg inspected timber mills and saw felling operations and the hauling of logs through the forest. They passed through some of the State’s apple country and at Harvey, Sir Bernard was greatly interested in the local irrigation scheme which is used mainly for fodder for dairying. Yesterday they attended the morning service in St. George's Cathedral and later drove through the city and suburbs to visit beach resorts.
