Effects Of 40-Hr. Week In Victoria
MELBOURNE, Dec. 11
The Victorian Institute of Public Affairs say the 40-hour week has created “new interest in incentive schemes.”
In a report on the operation of the 40-hour week, the institute claims that most workers are either doing overtime or taking week-end jobs. The labour shortage has been intensified, production has fallen, the output per manhour has remained the same and costs have risen.
The report says the shorter working week has brought not more leisure but higher incomes, but it has compelled managements to seek new ways to increase output and cut costs.
