CRIME INCREASE IN BRITAIN DUE TO WAR
(P.A.)
WELLINGTON, Dec. 13
The present increase in crime in Britain was purely attributable to the war and its aftermath, said Mr. HShepherd, S.M., chairman of the Wakefield Prison Board and deputychairman of the Bradford City Bench, on arrival in the Akaroa. The number of youthful criminals was increasing, said Mr. Shepherd. Measures were being taken to combat the troubles at their source by the formation of youth clubs in the big cities. Many young people who had entered the services straight from school had missed the fundamental training period of their lives. Demobilised after the war they had presented a great problem. Trade training and useful pursuits were being increasingly taught in British prisons. In his opinion, the present increase would subside as had others before it.
