R.S.A. BOWLS: W. JACKSON’S FOUR FOR TRIP SOUTH

The only time the umpire was called upon in Saturday’s bowling tournament, organised and conducted by the R.S.A. bowls committee, was on the final head of the deciding game between VV. Jackson’s Kahutia team and S. McKenzie's Poverty Bay Club four.

The decision, given by Mr. C. C. Somervell, after using the calibrator, conferred upon Jackson's team the right to represent the Gisborne Returned Services’ Association at the national R-S.A. tournament to be held in Christchurch late in March. The margin by which the match was won and lost was a bare eighth of an inch. The outcome of the district tournament was awaited keenly by large numbers of participants in the fixture, the second of the annual series instituted in 1947 by the Gisborne association. Jackson lost his first-round game to Anderson’s Gisborne team, but won his second, third and fourth. McKenzie meantime had had an uninterrupted run of success, and he met Jackson in the fifth round with four wins to his credit—the only skip with that score. Jackson defeated him in that round, however, and promoted two other teams besides his own to qualify for post-section play.

Rinks In Semi-Finals. The other rinks which passed into the semi-final with four wins each were W. Riddell’s Gisborne four and W. Crowley's Tolaga Bay team. Thus four clubs were represented in the semi-final round: and after McKenzie had defeated Crowley and Jackson had accounted for Riddell, the two finalists settled down to a dour struggle for supremacy. The Kahutia skip scored a single on the first head and McKenzie squared it on the second, only to have his opponent go one ahead again on the third. The fourth head gave McKenzie a two, and he entered the last head one up on Jackson. This head again gave Jackson a single, and an extra head was playedBest of the first eight bowls in this head was P. Norberg’s second, which rested almost on top of the jack and put Jackson in a very favourable position. A. R. Smith, playing No. 3 for McKenzie, drew a beautiful shot from the left hand, and it was a tossup as to which was the shot when the skips went down. Neither of the skips improved matters, and the umpire was called upon to measure, with the result indicated above.
