JACK BENNY, the famous American comedian, recently went to Britain. where he is well known for his radio programme, "The Jack Benny Show," heard during the war. Benny is one of the highest paid of all American radio stars, and every Sunday some thirty million American listeners tune into his half-hour show, in which he is supported by his wife, Mary Livingstone band leader Phil Harris, who subjects him to cruel insults each week and his coloured manservant, Rochester. Benny, who was born in 1894, had a longing to he a great violinist. He began in vaudeville at 17, but his career was interrupted by the First World War. After the war he began to make a name and appeared in several big: musicals on Broadway. One of the secrets of his success is his perfect timing. It is not the gags he cracks so much as the way he says them that make him the favourite comedian of a large body of American listeners.
