Injured Gisborne Resident Returns By Air From Australia

(P.A.) AUCKLAND. Dec. 13. Although she was not able to walk because of the effect of a broken leg, Mrs. M. Lawless, Gisborne, who is 86, made the crossing by air from Sydney to Auckland alone yesterday. She was discharged from the Sydney Hospital at 3 o'clock yesterday morning and was taken to the flying-boat base in time to catch an aircraft at G o'clock. Arrangements were made for her comfort during the trip by Tasman Empire Airways and site was met at Mechanics’ Bay by an ambulance which took her to the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. H. Fredrickson, Ponsonby. She is to leave this morning by ambulance aircraft for Gisborne. Mrs. Lawless went alone to Australia about two months ago for a holiday. While she was in Sydney she stumbled and broke her leg. Mrs. Lawless said she enjoyed the trip across the Tasman. The back of the seat in the aircraft was lowered sufficiently to allow her to lie down. Her only regret was she was not able to see out of the portholes of the flyingboat.
