“NOBODY CAN PREDICT ’FLU EPIDEMIC”
P.A.).. DUNEDIN, Dec, 10
“Nobody on God’s earth can predict an influenza epidemic,” said Sir Charles Hercus, Dean of the Otago Medical School, commenting on overseas and New Zealand reports of the possibility of a world-wide epidemic of influenza. “From the scientific point of view there is no relationship between the virus of influenza and the virus of poliomyelitis," Sir Charles added, referring to a Wellington doctor’s statement that some medical authorities saw a possible connection between these two diseases.
Virus research at the Otago Medical School is conducted by Dr. G. M. Richardson, a scientist who is working on the principal virus complaints suffered in New Zealand —influenza, the common cold, and poliomyelitis.
