APPLICATION FOR TRANSFER OF TAXI LICENSE

(S R.) WAIROA, Dec. 10. The No. Transport Licensing Authority was occupied for some time yesterday hearing an application from L. M. Shaw for the transfer of his taxi license to Z. Saba. This was opposed by G. E. Thompson and G. H. Duley, who had applications in for taxi licenses. Lengthy evidence, which at times proved contradictory, was given, the applicant claiming that he received only £OOO for a 1937 model car, plus £IOO goodwill, whilst other witnesses stated that when they made overtures to purchase Shaw’s business they were informed that £ISOO was the price. Shaw stated in evidence that it was a condition of the sale that he should be employed by Saba for three years as a driver, the applicant finding it necessary to sell for the reason that the authority had granted a further license at a recent sitting which had the effect of squeezing him out. The licensing authority, Mr. E. J. Phelan, in announcing that his decision would be reserved, suggested that as Saba was not a returned man and the law required that preference be given to an ex-serviceman. Shaw should make up his mind either to retain his license or to sell to a returned soldier. Mr. Phelan added: “Otherwise I will leave it to the imagination of those interested as to what will happen.”
