Doctor Removed Own Appendix: On Job Next Day

(10 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 10. A German surgeon, Dr. Theodor Herr, claims to have taken out his own appendix, says Reuter’s correspondent in Hamburg. He said that he used novocain as a local anaesthetic.

Half-sitting and half-lying, he then carried out the operation, _as an assistant handed him the instruments. Dr. Herr added that he used no mirrors and was able to get up next morning and attend to patients. Most patients can readily get out of bed by the third or fourth day after an operation, and many with advantage might get up even earlier, according to the British Medical Journal. Morale, it says, is greatly improved by early rising, and most patients, having overcome their natural apprehension, are gratified to find how comfortable and fit they are—general health and strength are better maintained and convalescence more rapid.
