MOSLEM BROTHERHOOD BANNED IN EGYPT

(11 a.m.)

LONDON, Dec. 9

A state of emergency was proclaimed throughout Egypt by the police last night; a few hours after tiro issue of a decree ordering the dissolution of the Moslem Brotherhood which is accused of plotting to overthrow the Government, says the British United Press correspondent in Cairo. There was a suspicion that the brotherhood was implicated in the riots and disturbance? when Cairo’s police chief was killed by a hand grenade. The Moslem Brotherhood was originally formed 20 years ago as a religious organisation spreading the teachings of Islam. Its critics 4 allege it became a political body in later years. Guards have been placed on all the Brotherhood’s premises and police raids on the homes of members are expected to be carried out during the night. The Brotherhood claims it has 500.000 members and 1,000.000 sympathisers. Its funds arc to be seized.
