WORK GOING WELL ON NEW 2XG HOME: EARLY OCCUPANCY
With a strong force of carpenters now engaged, and much of the interior partition framing already erected, progress in the direction of providing the new studio of station 2XG is going well. It is anticipated that the reconstruction of part of the upper floor of the former Arch, Clark warehouse, at the intersection of Gladstone road and Peel street, will be completed early in the New Year. The work is being done within the existing walls of the building, and consists mainly of partitioning off portions of the space lately used as a tea-room into areas designed for use by the programme compiler, programme director, technicians, and artists. An existing suite of offices will be made over to provide office accommodation for the station manager and clerical staff, and also for the station library. In the rear of the former tea-room, the kitchen accommodation is being torn out and will be replaced by a workshop and other amenities required for tlie running of the station. Audiences to be Catered For From what is known of the accommodation in other towns where increased radio facilities have been provided, Gisborne’s radio headquarters should compare more than favourably. The studio itself will provide space for small audiences on occasions when local artists are broadcasting from the station, and audience-participation shows will be possible with up to 50 or 60 people taking part. Control of programmes will follow the usual lines, with the programme director and technicians in different rooms, both enjoying a clear vision of events in the studio itself and with provision for visual and oral communication. Solid Sound-Proofing Sound-proofing measures include triple-layer walls which should insulate the studio from all outside noises, and even the glass panes between the studio and the control rooms will be sound-proofed. Staff and equipment will be moved into the new quarters as soon as they are ready, but it is unlikely that the station will operate its 2k.w. transmitter for some months.
Practically all the sections of the transmitter are in the country, it is believed, but erection will not commence until after the turn of the year. The site chosen for the transmitter at Wainui is still vacant, but it is hoped that work will be started in January on the necessary building there to house the remote-control apparatus which will be a feature of the set-up.
