"Better Than Goldmine”
During the hearing of a claim heard by the Compensation Court in Hamilton a witness was telling of the value of a sand deposit in certain localities, when Mr. Justice Stanton remarked that a suggestion had been made that the owner could sell all the sand in the pit at 5s a yard, and that the sand was all over the farm. “If one could sell a whole farm at 5s a cubic yard that would be better than a gold mine,” commented the Judge, and he added that nearer Auckland some owners of metal deposits were making a lot of money by sales at Is 3d a cubic yard.
