MYSTERY SPITFIRES DETAINED AT RHODES
(10.45 a.m.) LONDON. Oct. 3. Greek press reports stated that two Spitfires, apparently from behind the “iron curtain,” landed mysteriously at Rhodes and the pilots were detained, says the Associated Press correspondent in Athens.
The newspapers said the planes bore red markings. , Reuter’s correspondent in Athens says the Governor-General of Rhodes renorted to the Greek Foreign Office that the Spitfires were piloted by Jews, one of whom had a South African passport. The planes were alleged to be bound for Haifa. The pilots are believed to be Czechoslovaks.
