PROPERTIES TO BE RESTORED TO VALUE BEFORE TORNADO

(P.A.) HAMILTON, Aug. 31. The cardinal principle of policy laid down by the Minister of Finance, Mr. 4V. Nash, and the Minister of Rehabilitation, Mr. C. F. Skinner, concerning assistance that is to be granted to sufferers from (he tornado in Frankton and Hamilton last Wednesday and announced bv the Ministers before they left Hamilton for Wellington is restoration as far as possible of property to the owner to the value prior to the disaster, it being generally understood that no profit should be made. Mr. Nash stated that to ensure proper administration and an equitable decision regarding grants necessary to meet costs incurred in restoration or improvement, it would be necessary for all claims to be examined in relation to the value of the property, mortgages and other factors. The following local committee was established to determine terms ancl conditions where owners were required to find some part of the costs of restoration, and t*i decide any other matters involved in placing people back on their feet again:— Messrs. H. D. Caro, Mayor of Hamilton; 11. M. Hammond, member of the Hamilton City Council; J. H. W. Barber, district rehabilitation officer; E. C. Day. member of the rehabilitation loans committee; E. P. Exelby, Frankton Ratepayers and Citizens’ Association; and A. R. Ibby. secretary of the Hamilton Carpenters’ Union.
