NEUTRAL ZONE FIXED IN JERUSALEM
1 N.Z.P.A.—Reuter —Copyright. 1 LONDON. Aug. 29
All the Arab States and Jews have agreed to the establishment of a neutral zone in Jerusalem from midday tomorrow stated General Lundstroem, Count Bernadotte’s Chief of Staff, in Cairo today. ... , United Nations truce observers would be in the zone to watch any armed incursion. General Lundstroem predicted a quick end to a “ruthless battle” in Jerusalem. TP day, however, the Jewish and Arab forces in Jerusalem ignored three United Nations’ demands to withdraw from fighting positions, says Reuter's correspondent in Jerusalem. Count Bernadotte's representative, General W. E. Riley, asked, first, that the Jewish and Arab forces withdraw from the Red Cross zone south of Jerusalem; secondly, the Arab Legion should withdraw from a building in Deirabutor on the southern outskirts of the city, and thirdly, that Arab Legionaires withdraw from positions on Mount Zion. Neither the Jews nor Arabs moved tonight. The Arabs fired on observers when they went to check whether the Arabs had left the building in Deirabutor.
