Catholic Bishops Defy Czech Communist Regime
(10 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 29. Roman Catholic bishops in churches throughout Czechoslovakia today read a defiant memorandum to the Government, says the British United Press correspondent in Prague.
The memorandum calls upon the Government “to end its systematic battle against the church”. It also complains of the "secret fight against the church and religion on the lines used against the church in other countries.” The memorandum brings to a head the struggle between the Church and State over the future of the Roman Catholic schools. The Government has demanded control of the schools. In re.aliation the Catholic Church has refused to endorse the Communist regime and the status of priests participating in politics.
