CANADA SEEKS N.Z. BUTTER IMPORTS
(10 a.m.) MONTREAL, Aug. 29. In an editorial the newspaper Montreal Gazette says the Government is reported to be actively exploring the possibility of importing butter from New Zealand and from Denmark or both to supplement the “increasingly ominous reduction” in Canadian stocks. It is uncertain whether New Zealand butter is available because of New Zealand’s commitments to Britain and Denmark.
The retail price of New Zealand butter would be high unless the import duty is reduced, and the main hope of relief centres on the repeal or suspension of the ban on margarine, which “is recommended by the National Dairy Council if other alternatives are impracticable.” The total Canadian butter stocks on August 1 dropped 14,'500,0001b. below 1947, and the total deficiency in the winter will probably be 25,000,0001 b.
