Steel Nationalisation Bill This Session

LONDON, Aug. 27. The Government will introduce the Iron and. Steel Bill early in the autumn session which will open on September 14, says Reuter’s political correspondent.

This will end the recent speculation whether the Government intends to nationalise the steel industry. The primary object of the two weeks’ session is to secure the second reading by the House of Lords of the Parliament Bill, which is designed to reduce the Lords’ power of delaying legislation from two years to one. If the Government introduces the steel nationalisation bill not later than one year before the 1950 elections it can become law before Labour seeks re-election. The House of Lords threw out the Parliament Bill last session and is expected to do so again in the short session.

The bill will be re-submitted to the House of Lords in the long autumn session and will automatically become law in' 1949 regardless of the Lords' rejection.
