Dieppe Raid Ensured Success Of D-Day, Says Mountbatten
(10 a.m.) OTTAWA, Aug. 29. Earl Mountbatten of Burma, who planned the Dieppe raid of August, 1942, declared in a speech yesterday it was “probably the most important raid of the war and if I had the same decision to make again I would do as I did before.” Earl Mountbatten said the raid, which was one of the most controversial actions of the war, had demonstrated the necessity for an artificial port. It probably ensured the success of the D-day landings and became the “Bible” of assault operation in the Mediterranean. It fooled the Germans “utterly and completely” into concentrating their defences on the ports and leaving the beaches relatively open for D-day. He added that the Canadians had been chosen for the raid because General Andrew McNaughton, commander of the'Canadian overseas forces, had specially asked for the job.
