INCOME TAX
Sir, —In your article in your Issue of August 27, “Looking Back on the New Zealand Budget,” you quote the figures of' a Wellington writer in connection with the income tax assesments which are not correct. As quoted by newspapers, the Minister of Finance stated that a rebate of £lO was to be made on the income tax of individuals. In the aggregate assessment of man and wife each would be allowed a rebate of £lO (a total of £2O). The figures should be: Man. £24 10s: wife, £4 7s fid; total, £2R 17s 6d. Aggregate assessment. £32 2s 2d: difference. £3 4s Bd, and not £l3 4s 7d as stated. J. BAYLISS. [Mr. Nash’s first statement in the House of Representatives was ambiguous and the Wellington writer appears to have been misled. In view of the Finance Minister’s later clarification of the rebate issue, our correspondent’s reckoning is correct—Ed. Herald.j
