30 TEAMS TAKE PART IN N.Z. TOURNAMENT
(P.A.) DUNEDIN, Aug. 30. Thirty teams are competing in the Dominion championship women’s hockey tournament which began at Dunedin on Saturday. Teams will play in two sections. In the. first the K Cup is at stake and In the minor section teams will compete for the Mills Cup. A feature of the tournament is the presence of the Australian touring team, which won its first match against Otago by three goals to nil. It was the hardest game which the tourists have been called upon to play since their arrival in New Zealand. In a spectacular opening ceremony the competing teams marched past the grandstand, the parade being led by the Australians in their attractive green and gold colours followed by Wellington, the present holders of the K CupFrom the early stages of the game with Otago Australia impressed with dazzling stickwork and Hick passing, which with its accuracy and effectiveness rather disconcerted the Otago players. Scorers were M. Campbell (2) and C. Ash. Results of play on Saturday:— K Cup, First Round. —Section A. Wellington 4 v. Wanganui 1; Waikato 3 d. South Canterbury A 1; Auckland A, a bye. Section B: Canterbury A 1 d. Eastern 0: Rangitikei 5 d. Ashburton 1; Auckland B, a bye. Section C: Wairarapa 8 d. Canterbury B 3: Australia 3 d Otago A 0; Taranaki, a bye. Minor Section, first round- —Section A: Eastern 6 v. Maniototo A 1; Ashburton 5 d. South Otago B 0: Bush A, a bye. Section B: Canterbury Malvern 4 v. Maniototo B 0; North Otago 3 d. Southland 2: Marlborough, a bye. C Section: South Otago A 3 d. Otago B 1: Tuapeka 3 d. South Canterbury 1: Nelson, a bye.
