CANTERBURY WINS NEW ZEALAND CUP AGAIN
(P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Aug. 30. Securing a convincing win from Auckland in the final of the New Zealand basketball championships at New Plymouth on Saturday, Canterbury retained the title and annexed the New Zealand Cup for the second year in succession, Canterbury went through the tournament without a loss, Auckland, last year’s runners-up, suffered their only loss at the hands of Canterbury and were again runnersup. Success in one of their two matches on Saturday was sufficient to gain Tauranga the second-grade championship for the second successive year. Taranaki were runners-up.
The third-grade championsnip was won jointly by West Coast and Marlborough, both of whom won 10 of 11 Australia defeated Taranaki 22—-11 in the only official nme-aside game of the Australian tour. Results:— First Grade.—Canterbury 29 d. Auckland 14; Wellington 23 d Hawke’s Bay 17; Wellington 25 d. Southland 15: Hawke's Bay 22 d. Manawatu 19. Second Grade. —Nelson 18 d. Horowbenua 11; Tauranga 16 d. Matamata 12: Taranaki 15 v. Waikato 11; Poverty Bay 18 d. South Canterbury 10; Nelson 12 d. Tauranga 9; Hutt Valley 15 d. Horowhenua 14; Southland Minor beat North Otago by default; Rotorua beat North Otago by default. Third Grade.—Temuka 14 d Te Kawau 13- Kaikoura 14 d. Canterbury Minor 11; South Auckland 13 d. Otago Minor 3; Wairarapa 12 d. Wairoa 8; Marlborough 28 d. Hawke’s Bay Minor 10; West Coast 13 d. Kaikoura 8; South Auckland 26 d. Manawatu Minor 19; Marlborough 22 d. Otago Minor 12; Wairarapa 11 d. Temuka 10: Te Kawau 14 d. Canterbury Minor 11.
