FESTIVAL FINALE : LEADING ENTRIES IN BIG PROGRAMME

A capacity audience at the Opera House on Saturday witnessed the demonstration concert with which the Gisborne Competitions Society wound up its annual festival, the programme comprising items by leading competitors in all sections of the festival, and the quality of the performances being highly satisfactory. - Opening with a selection by , the Deepdene Studio choir from Naipier, the first half included a humorous recitation by Andree deLautour, a piano duet by Beverley Carter and, Janice Angell, a tap dance by Margaret Scholium, a cornet solo by Colin Nunns, a song in costume by Barbara Perston, a story without words by Thomas Ryan and party, a sword dance by Bernice Thompson, a skipping dance by Mary McDonald, a recitation by Kevin Ryan, a duet in costume by Norma Gordon and Lesley Marshall, an Irish jig by Anne Naden, a tap duo by Loretta Ratcliffe and Margaret Simpson, a piano solo by Jean Angus, a recitation by April Ann Akers, a humorous monologue by Danny Ryan, a vocal duet by Pamela and Warran Bragg, a Highland Fling by Mary Dinnan, an operatic dance by Hilary Debden-Wilkins, a song and ballet by Elvira Courtney’s party, a Sean Truibhais by Dawn Le Bas, a violin solo by Roy Watt, a classic dance by Ella Randle, a song by Raymond Hambly, and a humorous recitation by Fleur Cook. In the second half, which opened with a 15-minute entertainment by “Aunt Daisy’s” 2ZM party, the performers included Niomi Johnson, song; Lesley Neale, character dance; Leaone Bimler, operatic solo; Toni Averill and Jocelyn Loughman, dance duo; Ingrid Husheer, song in costume; Mary King, sailor’s hornpipe; June O’Hagan, character sketch; Colleen Hills, tap dance; Patricia Adams, recitation; Ronald Steel, song; Valma Hutchins, Sean Truibhais; Barbara Mew, piano solo; Elva Mahoney’s party, group dance; Margaret Stewart, song; Beverley Powell, Highland Fling; Barrie Hibbert, humorous recitation; Gretna Mahoney, song and dance; Cynthia Kane, recitation; Valerie Mcßreen, Betty Campbell, Janice Duncan, Beverley Powell, Highland reel; and Margaret Simpson, recitation. Presentations of cups and other prizes won at the festival were carried out by Mr. F. Mcßreen, hon. stagemanager, in the absence of Mr. C. Blackburn. Mr. W. Kohn was the official accompanist.
