COMPETITIONS’ JUDGES OFFER SUGGESTIONS

COMMENTS ON WORK

Suggestions for future improvements in the programme of the Gisborne Competitions Society festival, concluded last week, were made by the judges when making their announcements on Friday evening. The elocution judge, Mr. Barton Ginger, Wellington, said he would have liked to have seen greater entries in the musical monologue class. Miss Ingrid Husheer, Napier, had given an excellent performance, and Mr. Norman Lee’s work was finely executed, despite the fact that he was suffering from a cold. It was. a tribute to the grit that he had in him. Mr. Ginger said.

In her comments on the fancy dancing, Miss Lorraine Major, Hamilton, said the children in the fancy or graceful dancing, under 9, did not do a great deal of dancing. They should have some idea. However, the placed competitors showed that that part of their training had not been neglected. She was sorry to see that a number of children in the toe dance. 12 to 16, had poor deportment. A number took their dancing a bit too slowly and that made the rhythm of the dance uneven. In awarding the Isobel Sharpies Cup for' the competitor showing most promise to Ella Randle, Miss Major said it did not seem necessary to her to award it to'the competitor gaining most points in the qualifying classes. Lorraine McDonald was a promising child, but was sufficiently advanced “to get _ along without a mere cup to help her.” Miss Major said she had not seen a great deal of Ella Randle, but she certainly showed promise. The judge of the instrumental and vocal classes. Mr. Harry Brusey, Wei-' lington, drew attention to the fact that most children had treble voices and that many of the songs chosen for them in duet work were too low, leading to the fact that a number were inclined to get out of tune. In the piano duet there was a tendency for the playing to become too mechanical and pianola-like.
