MAN GAOLED FOR INDECENT ASSAULT
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 23. "I dislike intensely having to send this man to prison, but Judges must have regard to the effect of a sentence on the public. Our womenfolk must be able to go through the streets even at night without fear of molestation. We must establish in the minds of all men an unpleasant association with the idea of indecent assault," said Mr. Justice Cornish in the Supreme Court today in sentencing a prisoner to six months’ imprisonment with hard labour. The prisoner was Patrick William Monaghan, aged 25, driver, who was found guilty, with a very strong rccom mendation to mercy by the jury, of indecent assault on a female.
A plea for probation was entered by his counsel
