WOMAN ACQUITTED.— After a retirement of 30 minutes a jury in the Supreme Court in Wellington yesterday acquitted Audrey Gwendoline McCarthy, a waitress, on a charge of stealing a silver fox fur valued at £SO. She was also found not guilty on an alternative charge of receiving the fur from Edward Frederick Garner, knowing that it had been stolen. Mrs. McCarthy had been convicted on a charge of theft by Mr. W. F- Stilwell, S.M., on May 7 and sentenced by him to 18 months’ probation. The magistrate, however, later granted an application by her counsel, supported by an affidavit of fresh evidence by Garner, for a rehearing. This was taken before Mr. H. J. Thompson, S.M., and on this occasion the accused elected to be tried by a jury.
