INTEREST IN U.S.A. IN OVERSEAS WAR BRIDES

(P.A.) AUCKLAND. July 23. Prominent citizens and universities in the United States were taking a practical interest in war brides from overseas, said Mrs. E. Beattie, Auckland, who returned by the Marine Phoenix today after a 14 months’ visit to her daughter, Mrs. Warren Major, who was chairwoman of the overseas wive's organisation in the State of Vermont.

Mrs. Beattie and her daughter gave a number of addresses on New Zealand. Governor Gibson, of Vermont, who was in New Zealand in wartime, was still greatly interested in anything relating to this country. The cost of living made conditions difficult for brides. Steak was nearly one dollar per pound and butter about the same price. Because of the high prices her daughter, Joy, planned to return later to New Zealand.
