SEAMEN REJECT WAR BONUS SUBSTITUTE
SYDNEY, July 22,
Seamen will have overtime rates increased to 5s an hour and will receive £8 a month sea-going allowance when they relinquish the war risk bonus- This was announced today in a new award.
Last Tuesday the Seamen’s Union threatened strike action over the alleged delay in the announcement of the findings. In giving his decision today the Federal Conciliation Commissioner said he could make no distinction between seamen ana other maritime unions, and overtime and the sea-going allowance would become available as soon as the union agreed to abandon the war risk bonus.
Meetings of seamen will be called at all Australian ports early next week to consider strike action as a protest against the new award.
