“JAYCEE” TEAM SCORES A WIN IN DEBATE
Following the fortnightly tea meeting, on Wednesday of the Gisborne Junior Chamber of Commerce, a debating team representing the "Jaycees” met a team from the Gisborne branch of the Labour Party, the subject debated being, “That the trend of modern amusement is detrimental to the education of the people.” Messrs. R. A. Keeling, E. C. Richards and G. Waits represented the Labour Party and Messrs. J. Nicholls, A. Webster and M. A. Andrews, who took the affirmative, the Jaycees.
The adjudicator, Mr. C- A. Smith, in awarding the debate to the “Jaycec” team, stated that only tw’o points separated the tcanis. He complimented all the' speakers, adding that all the speeches were of a uniformly high standard, and congratulated the two leaders, Messrs. Keeling ahd Nicholls, on' Inc' clear and concise w r ay they had outlined their respective approaches to the subject. Mr. R. McGlashen was chairman for the debate, while the president. Mr. C. H. Brittenden. was in the chair for the team meeting. Mr. Ii Tyerman was master-at-arms- .
