RICH COAL SEAM FOUND IN SOUTHLAND
(P.A.) INVERCARGILL, July 22. Recent boring operations by the Mines Department have proved a seam of coal varying in thickness from 6ft. to 13ft. of good quality and extending from the State- mine to the Birchwood mine.
There is little cover or overburden. Stripping will shortly take place. It is estimated that over 100,000 tons of coal could be produced from the area. The daily output from the Ohai coalfields should be increased when production commences by at least 150 tons.
