POPULAR EARLY RESIDENT PASSES: MRS. W. GRAHAM

In the passing of Mi’s. W. Graham the district loses one of its most popular early residents. Born in London 88 years ago, Mrs. Graham came to Gisborne in 1886 to join her brother, the late Mr. F. JShelton, and later she married Mr. William Graham. Her home at Mangatoetoe, Ngatapa, and later at “Ngakaroa,” Ormond, was always the centre of popular social activities and her haspitality to the young people was extensive.

Her bright personality and kindness gathered around her many friends, who will sincerely regret her passing. In the early days when the Gisborne Operatic Society played many wellknown comic operas Mrs. Graham +ook a leading role and older residents happily remember with appreciation the presentation of the stage characters she represented. Her playing of Phyllis in the leading role of “lolanthe,” and as one of the Three Maids in “The Mikado” made history in the annals of the society. Mrs. Graham received her musical training in London and was endowed with fine musical talents, particularly in playing the piano and organ. • She gave excellent organ recitals and for many years served as relieving organist to Holy Trinity Church'. In many local activities she took a leading part. For the past five years her health has caused concern to her family, but she always retained an active interest in all around her.

She is survived by her husband, two sons and two daughters. Messrs. Roland and J. Graham, Ormond, Mrs. W. SherrifT, and Mrs. F. S. Rathbone, Waipawa. There are four grandchildren. A service will be held at Holy Trinity Church at 11 am. tomorrow and the cortege will leave afterwards for the Ormond cemetery.
