E.C.A. May Buy Produce From N.Z. For Europe
(10 ajn.) WASHINGTON, July 22. If New Zealand and' Australia have for sale —at an “attractive” pricecommodities which could be used in European economic recovery the Economic Co-operation Administration is quite prepared to consider purchasing them. E.C.A. officials stated this yesterday in reply to questions concerning the possibility of Australia and New Zealand earning through the E.C.A. soma scarce dollar funds. However, these officials said that negotiations for the purchase of supplies had not been entered into as yet with either Government and. indeed, it was uncertain that New Zealand and Australia had anything to offer that E.C.A. needed. They pointed out that the United States foreign aid legislation stipulated that during the first year at least wool needed by the E.C.A. should be bought from stocks v held by the Commodity Credit Corporation.
