NEWS OF THE DAY

Arbor Day Planting The Cook County Council yesterday agreed, on the suggestion of Mr. R. Graham, to observe Arbor Day this year by continuing the planting begun last year at the approach to the Waihirere Domain. The county engineer, Mr. K. F. Jones, was instructed to secure the necessary trees and arrange for the protection of those planted.

Tiniroto Road Damage A settler in the Tiniroto area, Mr. J. Berry, wrote to the Cook County Council protesting against damage done to his access road by traffic comprising trucks owned by the State Hydro-Electric Department. The writer asked that the road be put in order and that the liability of the department be fixed. The council at its meeting yesterday instructed its engineer, Mr. K F. Jones, to inspect the road and report. Minimum County Sub-Division

A Makauri settler with about 24 acres in the floodable area was the proposer of a sub-division at Hexton which the Cook County Council was asked to approve at yesterday’s meeting. It was explained that the section which the settler was purchasing was on floodfree land on which he proposed to establish a refuge for his stock in flood periods. The area purchased was under two acres, at the outset, but it was stated that the vendor was agreeable to extending the area to two acres, the minimum provisionally fixed by the councillor county sub-divisions. The meeting gave its formal approval to the application.

Loading Restrictions The finding of a transport truck on the Bushy Knoll road with a load which brought the aggregate weight to more than six tons had a sequel at yesterday’s meeting of the Cook County Council, when letters were received from the owners of the truck and load respectively intimating that they were unaware of the load restrictions which the council had placed on the road. After discussing the matter in committee, the council accepted the explanation and agreed to take no action. Flood Damage Grants

The Cook County Council yesterday tendered its thanks to Messrs. E. H. Baker aid J. R. Hair, who . with the ’ council’s executive officers, visited Wellington recently and put the county flood-damage claims before the Government. In moving to that effect, Mr. M. T. B. Hall commented that the deputation had done an excellent job, judging by the report submitted on its activities. The report indicated that the claims of the council had been, noted most sympathetically, and that full consideration would be given to them. No information of the specific treatment to be given to flood damage claims was available for the meeting. Mr. J. R. Hair paid a tribute to the council’s officers for their preparation of the case, and to Mr. Baker’s skilful handling of the county’s case in Wei-, lington.
