"Coal Costs Doubled” Under State Control

AUCKLAND, .July 23. “It the Government subsidies arc taken, into account, the cost o£ coal per ton at the pithead was probably more than doubled since the coal mining industry was ’nationalised,” the president of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. Mr. J. F. Johnston, stated today. He described the statement by Mr. A. McLagan in the Westport Coal Bill debate in Parliament on Tuesday that private enterprise broke down in the operation of the mining industry as most unreasonable and unfair
“If allowance is made for the extra cost to the State of the non-availability of sufficient coal for the railways and electric power services and industry generally, the nationalisation of the coal industry will be one of the most costly and unsuccessful experiments in the history of nationalisation,” Mr. Johnston added.
