WAIKOHU DEFENCE ON PUHA GROUND GISBORNE-HASTINGS H. SCHOOLS ON OVAL The season’s first encounter with the senior Barry Cup at stake and the meeting- of the first fifteens of the Gisborne and Hastings High School will be outstanding features in district Rugby tomorrow. The Waikohu sub-union reps, are to defend the Barry Cup against the challenge of Wairoa on the Tuba ground. The School teams meet on the Gisborne Oval. The Barry Cup contest will probably draw a record assembly to the Puha ground tomorrow. Both the Waikohu (Poverty Bay) and Wairoa (Hawke's Bay) sub union representatives had had previous games for experiment and the development of combination this season and should be at their best. BARRY CUP HISTORY The Wairoa representatives of a quarter of a century ago became the first holders of the Barry Cup. Their successors down the years have been the most consistent winners of games for the trophy among teams representing the Wairoa sub-union and the Poverty Bay and East Coast onions and sub unions. In 1926', three seasons after it had first been won by Wairoa, the trophy was lifted by Poverty Bay and regained by Wairoa. The following year Tolaga Bay won it from and lost it again to Wairoa. In 1929 the cup returned to Poverty Bay. It was recaptured by Wairoa in 1960, went to East Coast in 1931, to Wairoa in 1933, to East Coast in 1937 and in 1938 back to Wairoa where it remained during the war years. In 1946 East Coast regained possession of the cup, but lost it last season to Poverty Bay. POSSESSION TO WAIKOHU During the presentation ceremony at Ruatoria following last year’s match, the president of the East Coast union, Mr. V. G. H. Rickard, suggested that the cup—which had always been open to challenge by East Coast and Poverty Bay sub-unions and the Wairoa subunion—should be reserved for games between the sub-unions, thus relieving them of any possible handicap in meeting union representative teams. The proposal was supported by the chairman of tire P.B. union management committee, Mr. M. 11. Beuth, who was present and was subsequently endorsed by the committee with the result that tne cup was this season handed to Waikohu, nolders of the Black and White Shield, who have withstood challenges for the shield from Ngatupa and Motu this year, thereby proving the strongest of the Poverty Bay sub-unions. SPEEDY SCHOOL TEAMS Last season Gisborne High School defeated Hastings, 12-nil, at Hastings. Tomorrow s game will be the first Scnool maten of the year for the Gisborne 'players, who, however, have shown a good standard of individual performance and combination in 11 matches in , the union intermediate grade competition.

The Hastings players also displayed pace and team worn in a recent game witn Dannevirke Hign School and tomorrows game will be expected to provide last Rugby of the type for which secondary scnools are noted. The senior teams of the P.B. union are to open the third round of the championship though the routine fourth series of games arc being substituted for the first series in order to avoid the counter-attraction to the School game of the meeting of two of the top teams, Old Boys and Celtic. Tomorrow Celtic meet Marist and Old Boys meet Union. In the two previous rounds, Celtic defeated Marist, 18-9 and 43-3, while Old Boys defeated Union, 14-nil and 36-nil. The .juniors play me second series ol the third round, the unbeaten leaders, Old Boys, meeting H. 5.0.8., in tne grandstand curtain-raiser. H. 5.0.8. lost the corresponding games of the lirst two rounds, 8 9 and 3-12. Third Grade Reps. To Travel

The respective sides provided a bright preliminary to the Gisborne-Wairoa senior game on the Gisborne Oval last month, play leaving little to choose as indicated by the G-nil score in favour of the home side.
