Maori Caught With Liquor

A fine of £2, with 15/- costs, was imposed by Mr. E. L. Walton, S-M., on a Maori, Jim Tuhaka, Kaili pa, when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court in Gisborne yesterday on a charge of aiding some person unknown to supply a Maori, himself, with liquor for consumption off licensed premises. Tuhaka, who pleaded guilty, had been seen with liquor in his possession in Lowe street by two constaoies, said Sergeant R. Griffith, prosecuting. The defendant would not disclose the name of the person who had supplied the liquor to him.

Transport Teams to Meet Again. The excellent spirit and closeness with which the recent Transport Rugby contest was waged on the Gisborne ground resulted in a challenge to a further trial and at Tokomaru Bay next month the Coast team will defend Ihe laurels gained by a narrow margin over Gisborne. In the Gisborne game each team notched two tries. Adding two penalty goals against one by the home side, Coast took the decision, 12-9. The Coast tries were scored by Forrester and Maxwell and the penalty goals were kicked bv S. Goldsmith and D. MeClutchie. Gisborne’s try-getters were D. Brown and F. Gear. The penalty goal was landed by W. Charley. The wi!l-to-win spirit was evident in spasmodic flashes of furious action which taxed the capacity of some of the enthusiasts not in regular training, but at least one well-known exponent was among the casualties reported to have retired with a dry throat, Mr. J. Lockwood was the referee.
