CAUGHT CLIMBING HOTEL FIRE ESCAPE
Caught while climbing the fire escape at the rear of the Coronation Hotel at 6.15 p.m. on Saturday, a 23-year-old Maori, Koro Pewhairangi, Haiti pa, on pleading guilty, was convicted and fined £5 by Mr. E. L. Walton S.M., in the Gisborne Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
The accused was charged with being found without lawful excuse, but under circumstances which did not disclose the commission of, or intention to commit any other offence, on the premises of the Coronation Hotel. Senior-Sergeant. G. S. Norris, prosecuting, said that the accused was seen by the son of the licensee climbing the fire escape. Pewhairangi came down when called and Senior - Sergeant Norris and Constaoie Gordon arrived on the scene just as he jumped from the fire escape. There had been complaints from several hotels recently of men climbing fire escapes to see members of the stall. He had been talking to a girl upstairs and as he could not hear her had climbed the lire escape, said the accused. It was significant that the offence was committed at 6.15 pan. and not in the middle of the night, said the magistrate.
