SWEEPSTAKES RIFE IN TASMANIA
HOBART, May 27
Mr. G. H. Faull told the annual conference of the Municipal Association that sweepstakes in Tasmania were so rife that “he could not get out of a town in Tasmania without being stung for 2s for a raffle.”
Justices of the peace, wardens of municipalities, and also parsons were breaking the law in regard to sweeps, he said, in moving that sweeps for charities and approved purposes should be controlled by a panel of justices of the peace. Other delegates said control should remain with the State because it was undesirable that justices of fhe peac should be placed in the position of having to “buy into local arguments.”
