CONSTABLE AS MIDWIFE
MELBOURNE. May 22,
A 36-year-old married constable, from a suburban police station, acted as midwife at the birth of a baby boy early today. He was at the police station at 4 a.m., when a man ran in and asked the constable to call a taxi to take his wife to a maternity hospital.
The constable went with the man to his home in the taxi, and found a woman in need of urgent attention from a doctor. The constable sent the husband to eet a doctor nearby, and stayed with the woman. When the husband and doctor came a few minutes later the child had been born.
Mother and baby were then taken by ambulance to a maternity hospital. The baby is well.
