U.S. SENATE PASSES CONSCRIPTION BILL
(9 a.m.) WASHINGTON, June 20.
The Senate after a 23 hours’ debate passed the compromise peace-time Conscription Bill, which is subject to approval by the House of Representatives. The bill provides that men aged 19 to 21 years inclusive will be drafted for
21 months’ service 90 days after the final enactment.
Senator Glen Taylor embarked on a filibuster in an endeavour to block the bill. He spoke twice during the debate for 11 hours in all and was assisted by Senator William Langer, who kept the debate alive while Senator Taylor had a sleep.
