DISTRICT HOCKEY REPRESENTATIVES TRY OUT STRENGTH

In a series of games designed to test the strength of their respective teams, in view of Ihe forthcoming visit to New Zealand of the Australians, hockey representatives of Hawke’s Bay and the Bay of Plenty assembled in Gisborne on Saturday to play a series of representative fixtures on tiic Childers Road Reserve.

A summary of the results is as follows:—

Juniors. —Gisborne High School 6 v Hawke’s Bay 1. Men’s B Section. —Bay of Plenty 5 v Poverty Bay B 1.

Men’s A Section,—Poverty Bay 5 v. Hawke’s Bay 1. Women’s Section. —Hawke's Bay 3 v. Poverty Bay A 2; Bay of Plenty 3 v. Poverty Bay B 1. Hawke’s Bay sides were tried out aganist the Poverty Bay senior representatives and teams from the Bay of Plenty were matched against B Grade sides of the home association. Poverty Bay men beat Hawke’s Bay. but in all other cases the home representative sides were beaten by the visitors. The Gisborne High School eleven scored a good win over Hawke’s Bay junior representatives and it was particularly noted that the students’ stick work was superior to that of their opponents. POVERTY BAY V. H.B. MEN

Particular interest was shown in the meeting of Poverty Bay A and Hawke’s Bav men and a closer decision was expected. Territorially, the game was fairly even and play was nicely turned by both sides from defence into attack. Hawke’s Bay lost two penalty bullies in the Poverty Bay circle, and the final result was in favour of Poverty Bay by five goals to one. The teams were:—

Poverty Bay.—A Coker, R. Shields, M. Lynskey, K. Cassin, R. Lowe, G. Cassin, J. Roos, A. Taylor, L. Roderick, T. Turbitt, G. McGregor.

Hawke’s Bay.—N. Dyer, C. Cassin, L. Cassin, D. Hill, B. Haigh, J. Somonsen, C. Williams, J. Hardy, K. Le Compte, S. Babbington, N. Stewart. The scoring ability of Poverty Bay was greater than that of the visitors. The pace slowed down slightly in the second half, but the contest maintained the interest of a large gallery of spectators.

Although the visitors’ centre forward, Le Compte, was watched carefully, he made a number of spectacular breaks and was always dangerous in attack. He was probably the best forward on the field, but credit should be given to Turbitt, Poverty Bay inside left, as having the older head and superior generalship. Turbitt engineered most of the Poverty Bay scoring movements. J. Roos followed through nicely to find the net on three occasions. For the visitors, Hill at right back gave a good account of himself on defence. The position was a little tense soon after the opening exchanges when a penalty bully was awarded Hawke's Bay in the Poverty Bay circle. Lynskey matched Le Compte and succeeded in clearing. G. Cassin opened the Poverty Bay scoring account with a neat goal from a penalty corner. With the score at one goal to nil, Hawke's Bay had another chance with an open goal when G. Cassin and Le Compte met on the second penalty bully to be awarded to Hawke s Bay. Le Compte was again unable to find the goal. After half-time Poverty Bay took the initiativeand the score mounted in thenfavour. Roos was the first to score in the second half. Turbitt made an opening shortly after for Roderick to increase the Poverty Bay lead still further to three-nil.

Roos accepted a ball centred nicely by Roderick to beat the Hawke’s Bay goalie once more and the next goal was the first and only one to be notched by Hawke’s Bay, despite their numerous chances. Le Compte was the scorer. In the closing stages Roos found the goalie out of position briefly and netted the ball for his third goal of the match. The umpires were Messrs. J. McKenzie and R. Ebbetts, WIN FOR HAWKE’S BAY WOMEN A well-merited goal shortly before the final whistle gave Hawke’s Bay women the decision over Poverty Bay A representatives by three goals to two in a game that was keenly contested. In the first half Hawke’s Bay were definitely superior and it was only dogged defence that kept the score down. Neither side had scored at half-time. A visiting full-back, R. Bevan, played untiringly and saved the day repeatedly tor Hawke’s Bay when Poverty Bay staged their recovery.Coming out for the final half, Poverty Bay found their feet and combination improved immensely. Miss J. Smiler gave a splendid account of herself and combined nicely with Miss G. Williams on the right wing. It was a hard fought finish and anybody's game. Two of the Hawke’s Bay goals were scored by T. Haraki and the deciding one was contributed by Mrs. M. Nicol with characteristic dash. The two Poverty Bay goals were shared by Misses J. Smiler and G. Carrington. BAY OF PLENTY MEN WIN Bay of Plenty men had the upper hand of Poverty Bay B in the latter stages. The stick work on both sides left much to be desired. The final score, four goals to one, gave a fairly good indication of the run of the play. Visitors showing out on attack and defence according to their positions were K. Civil, G. Boyden and P. Fraser, forwards, J. Stringer, wing, T. Ellis, centre-half, and B. Hill, full-back. The best of the home side were R. Watts, C. Corbett, Dickenson and P. Smiler. Play in the first half was indecisive until the final 10 minutes, although it had been fairly lively. In those final few minutes before the change D. Lewis had a run on the wing and got a goal home through the defence of the Bay of Plenty goalie. Bay of Plenty replied with pressure and Civil and N. Rigden each scored before the half-time whistle sounded. The visitors took charge in the second spell and their scorers were Stringer and Civil. POVERTY BAY IJ WOMEN BEATEN Bay of Plenty women look the decision over Poverty Bay B by three goals to one. There was not a great deal between these teams, but the Poverty Bay forwards were not combining at all well and were often found out of position. E. Chamberlain, the Bay of Plenty centre, gave a sterling display and K. Hunia also was outstanding. The Poverty Bay defence was very sound, particularly that of Mrs. R, Harvey. Goals for Bay of Plenty were scored by R. Matchett (2) and E. Chamberlain and the Poverty Bay goal was registered by Miss Billson .inside right, after a notable lone run down the field.
