VESTEYS MAY FORGO AUSTRALIAN LEASES

LONDON, May 20

Vesteys are believed to be ready to consider forgoing between 10 and 25 per cent of their Northern Territory leases in Australia, provided they receive guaranteed extensions of the remaining leases and certain other concessions as a quid-pro-quo. Lord Vestey would not comment today on the conference to be held in Canberra to discuss the leases on June 10. He said the conference was “news to him” and added that the Australian had been fully advised of Vesteys’ view's. His attitude had not changed since his return from Australia and he was willing to consider on their merits any new proposals the Commonwealth might made.
