SNOW ON MOUNT HIKURANGI AFTER HEAVY MAY RAIN

Following heavy rainfall during May there was a heavy fall of snow on Mt, Hikurangi last week. In the Mangaoporo Valley, near Ruatoria 19.44 in. of rain fell last month on 19 days, the heaviest 24-hour fall being 3.20 in on May 21. During May last year 10.74 in of rain fell, to bring the total for the first five months of last year to 51.17 in„ ,27in. less than for the corresponding period this , yearThunder and lightning was experienced at Pukewhero station, in the valley, on May 12. 13 and 14. _ Thz 12.37 in. of rain recorded on 17 days at Wairere station, near Ruatoria, last month, brought the total for this year to 29.36 in., which is nearly 6in less than the total for the same period last year, when 5.98 in. fell in May. The heaviest 24-hour fall last month was 3-46 in. on May 13. Although 16.47 in. of ram fell at. Fantu station, Wharerata, last month, the total for the five months of this year is only 41.58 in„ compared with, 71.91 m for the corresponding period in 1947. In Mav last year 12.88 in. was recorded. Rain fell on 15 days last month, the heaviest 24-hour fall being on May 13, when 3.9 Sin. was recorded.
