PLANT FROM U.S. FOR RIMUTAKA TUNNEL

( p A 1 MASTERTON, June 5. The construction of the Rimutaka Tunnel with the most modern machmery possible so that the work might be completed in under five years was proposed by the Government, said the Minister of Works, Mr. R. Sempie. Mr Semple said that the Commissioner of Works. Mr. McKillop, had gone to America with authority to secure the best and latest machinery for the construction of the Rimutaxa tunnel.

Mr. Semple recalled that it had tasen 15 years to construct the Otira tunnel, which was about the same length as the proposed Rimutaka tunnel, and the Government wanted to do the Rimutaka job in mucn less time. For that reason, it did not intend to start work with obsolete machinery. In the United States, by the use of the latest machinery, tunnelling could be done twice as last as here, and it was intended to get the best possible plant for the Rimutaka project. It was better to have some delay m getting plant than to make a start with obsolete machinery, he added.
