UNIONS URGE DOCTORS TO ACCEPT SCHEME
SYDNEY, June 3. The Federal Government will be asked by the Sydney branch of the Waterside Workers’ Union to deregister doctors who refuse to take part in the free medicine scheme.
The management committee of the Gas Employees’ Union last night adopted a motion appealing to the British Medical Association to have its disageement with the Federal Government settled by arbitration.
The central council of the Miners’ Federation has recommended members to approach their local doctor immediately, “preferably in an organised manner,” to indicate that their continued patronage depends upon the acceptance of the scheme.
The State president of the Waterside Workers’ Federation, Mr. T, Nelson, said that the Government did not hesitate to deregister the watersiders who refused to work. It should take similar action against doctors who refused to obey the law.
The general secretary of the British Medical Association, Dr. J. G. Hunter, said that only a handful of doctors in Australia were using the official prescription forms issued by the Government.
