THE G.N. HURDLES: A RACE FOR STAYERS

400 BRIGHT FOX (17), 11.12, is better . on a firm track and over two miles. However, his brilliant hurdling is a factor in his favour. 540 PRIZE RING (3), 11.6, is a solid hurdler and has won twice at Ellerslie in June; must be hard. 300 BOOLAMSKEE (2), 11.1, won the last National Hurdles, but maybe he is not now in the same form and condition. However, there will be many who include him among the decided possibilities. 00- BROOKBY SONG (13), 11.0, is unfortunately, under a cloud, but should he be anything like himself he may be in the call at the finish. 030 HUNTING MACK (15), 10.13, won last year with 10.1 and has done the same preparation as last season with no hurdle racing, but in hack fiat events. 002 TOWN SURVEY (7), 10.11, is a true stayer and for that reason is not disregarded. 001 CORINEUS (14). 10.5, the ruling favourite since his impressive display at Te Rapa, appears to be a sound stayer. He likes it soft, but his inclination to run down his fences prevents implicit faith being placed in this Lang Bian gelding. 021 HIPPODROME (9). 10.4, since giving a poor exhibition in a school last week has lost favour. He must not be disregarded as on his day he is good. 11

001 GOOD ARMOUR (19). 10.2, considered in some quarters as a “good thing” for the big steeplechase on Monday, has won this race previously and is not counted out this year either. 434 ERNADA (20), 10.2, would need to do better than he did at Waikato. 023 FOXSTAR (11), 10.1, was third last year, but has not won a flat race or a hurdles since then, although he has gone up 91b., while last year’s winner has been raised 121 b. Foxstar, being a good jumper, stayer and an able hurdler on soft going, must be one of the hard ones. 121 RED GLARE (16), 10.1, might be in the money, but will be at a fair price, 001 VASSILIKOS (6), 10.0, the only Gisborne-H.B. representative, is a splendid jumper and is in his element in heavy going, but being by Gynerium from Greek Diana discounts his chances a little. 001 BRITISH MINT <5), 9.12, won in his last start and his consistency and honesty gives a show. 002 MONTELLO D’ORO (1), 9.3, might stai’t in the earlier race, but would appeal here as a lightweight outside possibility. 010 VICTORY SONG (18), 9.0, on recent form has no show. 330 DIAMOND KING (22), 9.0, is not a strong hope, although bred to stay the course. 343 SOUTH RIDING (4), 9.0, if started would beat, on form, any of the others carded.
