NEW ZEALAND BACKS INDONESIAN CLAIMS

(11,30 a.m.) LONDON, June 2. The status of the Indonesian representatives provided the United Nations’ Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East with a puzzle within an hour of the beginning of the business session at Ootacamund (India), says Reuter’s correspondent. The problem, which defied solution at the commission’s earlier session, was whether the Jogjakarta Republican Government should be represented separately as an associate member or as part of the Netherlands delegation for all Indonesia.

Britain, France and the United States supported the Netherlands view that it was part of the Indonesian delegation. India, advocating the other view, had the support of Australia, Russia, Burma, Pakistan and Celyon. Mr. F. L. Hunt, New Zealand’s delegate took the same line as Australia and ’ urged the Netherlands to accept the Republic’s application. He asked M. Antoine Goldet, the representative of the United Nations’ SecretaryGeneral, whether Indonesia’s admission would automatically entitle her to membership of the United Nations.

M. Goldet replied that this was a matter for the United Nations’ legal experts.

The discussion was adjourned for three days.
