HOUSES ALLOCATED TO EX-SERVICEMEN
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 3. Another 159 ex-servicemen obtained State house tenancies during April. This brought the number of allocated houses up to the end of that month to 8401. Following are the district allocations to ex-servicemen as at the end of April with those for April itself shown in parentheses:—
Auckland-North Auckland 2462 (35), Waikato-Bay of Plenty 644 (5), Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay 361 (10), I Taranaki 242 (2), Wellington province (including Palmerston North, Wanganui and Masterton) 2972 (60), Nelson-Marlborough-Westland 198 (9), Canterbury Province 877 (29), Otago Province 466 (8), Southland 179 (1); totals, 8401 (159). More than £50,000,000 has been authorised in rehabilitation loans to exservicemen and women.
The latest figures as at the end of April show that 02,255 applicants had been granted loans amounting to £50,522,000. The total outlay on rehabilitation at the same date was more than £07,000,000. During April there were 1476 fresh authorisations totalling £1,161,481 with 78 farm loans in April. The total j under that head was brought to 4794 valued at £19,001,348. This included 578 men settled under the land settlement scheme. i Another 257 ex-servicemen were granted loans to build and 240 to purchase homes during April, the total value of these being £369,015 and £266,373 respectively. Altogether, at the end of April about 34,000 ex-servicemen had received direct housing assistance in some form through the Rehabilitation Board. In addition, a considerable number of Maori ex-servicement have been assisted through the Maori Rehabilitation Finance Committee and under Maori Land and Housing Acts.
