BIG CUT IN FORCES
AUSTRALIANS IN JAPAN MANUS ISLE DEFENCES (10 a.m.) CANBERRA. Apri' 29. Australia’s portion of the 8.C.0 F. in Japan is to be reduced from about 8500 troops to about 3000 by the end of the year This decision, taken yesterday by the Defence Council, is subject to ratification by the Cabinet. The men who are left in Japan at the end of the year will remain there indefinitely pending the negotiation of the peace settlement and will probably stay till well into next year. . . , The decision may be reviewed should the international situation suddenly deteriorate. . . The Defence Council also decided to proceed immediately with the development of Manus Island as a large-scale defence base. The developmental plans provide for facilities for powerful air protection
